Dental Implants in Austin, TX
Dental implants are a permanent, long-lasting option to replace missing teeth. They provide a platform on which crowns and bridges can be built, or used to support dentures. There are many uses for an implant depending on the patient’s needs.
Implants are a great option because of their longevity. Typically, an implant should last for a lifetime, which is better than most other dental procedures. At Oak Hill Family Dental Center, the team works together to provide the best smile results possible.

Understanding the Process
Dr. Nelson believes most patients are good candidates for implants. He does a full examination to determine the condition of the mouth and jaw. If he determines the patient will benefit from the procedure, the team moves to the next step.
- The first phase of the implant process is to place a small, metal cylinder into the bone where the missing tooth is. This is designed to replace the root. Once placed, the bone will need about four months to heal and bond to hold the implant.
- When the bone is completely healed, Dr. Nelson takes an impression to send to the lab, which will create the abutment that will secure the crown to the implant. This process takes about four weeks. Once the abutment is placed, he takes an impression for the custom-made crowns.
- In the final phase, the crowns are placed into position. The patient can now proudly show off their new smile and enjoy life to its fullest again!
Dr. Nelson typically has an oral surgeon or periodontist place the implant to ensure proper placement. It’s important to respect the many structures in the facial bones and jaw. He believes the surgeon or periodontist are the right persons to provide the best care possible for his patients.
